Typical Wedding Procedure Of Hindu Religion in Nepalese Context among Bramhin/Chhetri Community

Again along with start of new year many lives tied a knot of wedding this season too. Major months for wedding are, Baisakh , Jestha, Ashad, Mangsir, Magh and Falgun of Nepalese calender which are first and last 3 month of the year. According to English Calender it falls on  April-May, May-June, June- July, Nov-Dec, Dec-Jan, Feb-March respectively. These 6 month are only seasons for wedding.
Few years back no marriage were done except these month excluding some festival  such as Bijaya Dashami, Ram Nawami, and Saraswati Puja which are believed to be auspecious and fortunate. But as time passed by, modernization hit the peoples way of living and many things changed, so did wedding pattern too :) . In today's context wedding are held on any season date or month. Here I would like to explain in brief about the wedding procedure and  functions which are followed traditionally since last so many years.
Bride Groom and Bride are said  Dulha and Dulhai respectively.

Most of the people still believe in astrology and calculate some details regarding match matching of boy and a girl according to their horoscope. If they match to each other, a certain specific auspicious date is discussed which is typically said as "लगन ". In a typical arrange marriage, when both families along with boy and girl are happily ready for the proposal, they fix a certain date for engagement ceremony. On that very day, boy along with his family, friends and relative go to ladies home. In Nepalese context engagement is done by exchanging "टिका" and garland. Discussion regarding wedding date is done and, ladies family request to bridegrooms family to come to their home on certain date n time for wedding ceremony which is said as "Janai Supari" (जनै सुपारी). Guests are served with varieties of dishes and and they return.
In between engagement and wedding date, lots of shopping are done which are gifted to relatives on wedding date. Special Rotis and most popular rice flour ball "Kasar" (कसार ) are made specially for wedding. Jagiya "जगिया" , a special small stage like place sorrounnded by Banana trees  is made in both homes where Puja are done. On wedding day, bride groom and his friends and relatives goes to brides home along with typical music which is said as Panche Baja. " पन्चे बाजा ".
After arrival on brides home, certain formalities are done to groom, and bride is called for ceremony. She revolves 3-7 circles around groom by droping water through special jar, which is kinda worship and warm welcome to him. They again exchange tika and garland. Now this is time to exchange Ring. And this procedure is said as Soyambar "सोयम्बर ".  For fun , brides sister take away grooms shoes and ask for some gift or money on return back of shoe. This play is names as Shoe hiding Act. "जुत्ता  लुकाऊ  ".  On wedding day, Groom provides some items which are meant to be symbol of marriage, like, Bangle(चुरा ), kind of necklace (पोते). Bride and groom make 3-7 circles together around Jagiya "जगिया" where fire is set, said to be, "आग्नी ".  Bride Groom puts on Sindoor(सिन्दुर) orange color powder on brides forehead and head, which formally means they are married.

This is how a marriage is officially completed. Side by side for formal introduction of both families to be one, both bride n grooms parents meet and exchnage Tika with eachother and pour Color powder in celebration. This function is said "सम्धी- सम्धिनी  भेट ". Bride Groom takes his bride with him to his house bidding bye to brides family. And shhe is welcomed on his house by grooms sisters first with some rituals followed by others. The next morning after wedding small Puja " चतुर्थी " is done by both newly married couple together. Same day they return back to brides home again  for some formalities and formally wedding ceremony gets completed.
